Het einde van het schooljaar, dat hier al half juni valt, betekende naar goede gewoonte weer dat er kadootjes gemaakt moesten worden. Elke keer dat een van de dochters naar een ander groepje in de kribbe gingen, of dat er een schooljaar gedaan was, was dat weer een zoektocht, en tegelijk ook altijd een soort race tegen de klok (zie hier en hier). Want hoe lang je dat eigenlijk al op voorhand weet (een heel schooljaar of zo? ;-)), toch slaag ik er niet in om eens op tijd klaar te zijn. Of om eens gewoon een keertje niet iets zelf te willen maken. Want eerlijk is eerlijk, je doet het toch eigenlijk alleen maar jezelf aan he 😉 Maar het is sterker dan mezelf, ik wil het gewoon graag zelf doen. Iets helemaal zelfgemaakt komt ook echt helemaal uit het hart. De tijd en energie die ik daarin steek, is toch nog altijd het grootste bewijs van waardering, durf ik dan te denken. Al is er tegelijk een stemmetje dat zegt: een bon van het een of ander is eigenlijk even goed en maakt de juffen ongetwijfeld even blij… Maar kom.
Dit jaar eindigde mijn zoektocht bij een pakketje dat bestond uit:
- een poezelig warmtekussen
- een potje zelfgemaakte, suikervrije hazelnootchoco
- thee (hoe kan het ook anders…)
En daarnaast nog een stoelkroon als extraatje voor de klas.
Voor het warmtekussen wilde ik eerst deze tutorial gebruiken van de blog A Beautiful Mess. Maar ik herinnerde me dat ik ooit eens een ander poeze-warmtekussen zag, en vond inderdaad dit patroontje terug. Gezien het hier ook nooit zal veranderen en ik alweer nogal lichtelijk in tijdsnood zat, moest het zo makkelijk mogelijk zijn. Een poezengezichtje apart eraan naaien en nog te borduren… Tja, het klonk zo mooi, maar het zat er niet in helaas.
Ik gebruikte dus het patroontje van de blog stikstuk, maar omdat het me wat klein leek, heb ik het gewoon een beetje groter gemaakt. Ik gebruikte net als zij voor 1 kant nicky velours, lekker zacht in de nek, en voor de andere kant een katoentje. Ik gebruikte hetzelfde katoentje al voor deze Noa pants en heb er nog veel van over. Het is zo leuk kleurrijk, dus dat leek me wel ok. Als vulling gebruikte ik gewone rijst, met enkele druppels lavendelolie erop. Ik had voor de 6 warmtekussentjes drie pakken rijst van 2,2kg nodig, wat dus neerkomt op 1,1kg per stuk, voor wie het zich zou afvragen. Dit is werkelijk een heel snel projectje. Ware het niet dat ik er 6 moest maken, het zou me op een half uurtje klaar geraakt zijn.
Daarnaast werd er dus voor zowel het klasje van Sia als dat van Rosanne een stoelkroon gemaakt, in navolging van het geweldige idee en handleiding van Hilde@Home. Ik heb wel wat gefoefeld langs alle kanten. Ik moet een kat een kat noemen: propere afwerking is niet helemaal mijn beste kant. Ik naaide wattine aan de achterzijde van 1 van de buitenkanten, dan de voering tegen elke kant, en dan de twee kanten tegen mekaar. Dat kan dus echt wel beter, maar ach. Ik gebruikte een gouden kroon, een patch, vilten vlagjes die rond een lintje gestikt werden met gouden draad en een pompomlint. Voor de afmetingen had ik stiekem mijn lintmeter mee naar de klas genomen en dat daar raprap nagemeten op die kleine stoeltjes.
Tenslotte had ik me aan de choco gezet. Sia is nogal gevoelig aan suiker, dat is ook veel erger geworden doorheen de tijd. Als ze nu wat teveel suiker eet, wordt ze echt ‘zottekes’ zoals we dat zeggen. Ze kan zich dan soms echt niet meer controleren, en dat is voor niemand aangenaam, ook niet voor haarzelf. Bokes met choco waren dus na 1 poging met Nutella echt uitgesloten. Ik zocht en vond een alternatief door wat recepten te combineren en zo eten de kids nu met heel veel plezier en zonder schuldgevoel voor de mama elke dag bokes met zelfgemaakte, suikervrije choco. Het recept zal ik misschien wel eens op de blog zetten, ik maakte al foto’s tijdens het maken. Ik wilde de juffen ook wel verblijden met onze choco, dus er werden hier grote hoeveelheden hazelnoten etc verwerkt, tot er genoeg potjes in de ijskast stonden.
Samen met een doosje lekkere thee en een kaartje, werd alles in een zakje gestoken. Stempel erop, washitape erop, en klaar!
De juffen hebben het zakje niet geopend waar wij (en de andere ouders) bij waren, maar de stoelkroon werd alleszins dolenthousiast onthaald. Hopelijk de rest ook 🙂

The end of the schoolyear is also the time to make teachers gifts again. Up until now every time one of my daughters went to a different group at daycare or at the end of a schoolyear, I started the search for the ‘perfect’ gift. I always ended up with a race against time, but nonetheless I managed to make it work 🙂 (see f.i. here and here). It’s actually kind of funny: every time you know it so long upfront, but yet every time again I am in big time constraints and have to work until the night before to get it done! Sometimes I think I should just give up on it and make my life a little easier by just buying something instead of making it. But it’s stronger than myself, I just like the idea behind it, and the fact that I put my time and energy in it somehow makes it feel like the biggest proof of my appreciation. Although I admit there is this little voice in my head yelling that teachers appreciate store-bought gifts or gift vouchers just as much 😉
This year my gift contained of these things:
- a kitty rice heat pack
- a jar of homemade, sugarfree hazelnut cacao spread
- tea (starts to be a tradition ;-))
I added a ‘chair crown’ for the class to this.
For the heat packs I wanted to use this tutorial by A Beautiful Mess. But I remembered having seen another type as well, and found this tutorial and pattern online. Given the fact that I was already under some time pressure, it had to be easy and quick, and a separate kitty head and some embroidery couldn’t be fit in my time schedule anymore, unfortunately.
So I ended up using this pattern, but because it seemed to be a little on the small side, I enlarged it a bit. I used velvet for one side (so nicely soft!) and a regular quilting cotton for the other side, from a fabric I used before on these Noa pants. I used regular rice for filling the heat pack, and added a few drops of lavender essential oil. For the 6 heat packs I needed, I used 3 packs of each 2,2 kg rice, so 1,1 kg per heat pack, for whoever would want to know. Unless you also have to make 6 packs, this is a really quick and easy project. I think you can make 1 in about half an hour.
For both Sia and Rosanne’s class I also made a chair crown, an idea from the great Belgian blog Hilde@home. She makes gorgeous things, and has the best tutorials, one of them being this chair crown. I didn’t finish the crown neat, and didn’t follow the tutorial, I only had a quick look. But it isn’t hard to find out how it has to be. I used batting at one side to make it a bit more stiff, and sewed it against the back of one of the outer sides. I lined the whole thing, and then sewed the lined front against the lined back, and turned it around again. The seams are thus visible inside, but well, I don’t think the kids will mind about that. For embellisments I used a golden fabric as crown, felt flags which I stitched with a golden thread on a nice ribbon, a rainbow patch, and pompom ribbon. But you can obviously chose whatever you like to embellish such a crown. I had secretly quickly measured the chairs in the kids’ classes to know the size of the chair crown.
Last but not least I had made sugarfree hazelnut cacao spread. Sia is very sensitive to sugar, something that has gotten worse over time. When she eats something very sweet, she can really go crazy, but not in a pleasant way. It is no fun, especially also not for herself. So after having tried 1 slice of bread with the regular Nutella, we quickly knew this was a 1-time experiment. I searched the web and found some recipes that I combined into one that worked for us and that the kids actually really love. So they can now eat their bread with cacao spread everyday without any problem or without me feeling guilty about the amount of sugars 🙂 I wanted to share that with the teachers, so made all of them a jar of this recipe.
To all that I added a package of nice tea and a card, put it in a bag, stamped the bag, a little tape on it, and done!
The teachers didn’t open the bag in our presence (and the presence of all other parents), but they did see the chair crown and were highly enthusiastic about it! Hopefully they liked the other things too 🙂
