Zoals jullie wel gemerkt zullen hebben, was het hier de afgelopen maanden nogal tamelijk povertjes gesteld op de blog. Ik had en heb nochtans vanalle naaisels waarover ik nog kan bloggen. Maar het ontbrak me aan tijd en energie. Onze nakende verhuis naar Trinidad (ik was van plan hier al over te bloggen, maar nog niet gelukt… gebeurt heel snel, beloofd!) heeft echt al mijn energie opgeëist en de hele situatie heeft me bij momenten mentaal nogal overhoop gehaald.  Dat verklaart de stilte hier dus wel zo’n beetje. Naaien is er al helemaal niet meer van gekomen. Het lukte gewoon niet. Ergens voelde ik wel dat ik iets wilde, bijna ‘moest’ doen, al was het maar om mijn gedachten te verzetten, eens met iets anders bezig te zijn, iets te doen dat ik ‘kan’ en dat me een goed gevoel geeft. Maar ik kon het niet opbrengen.

De laatste 2-3 weken werd het echter toch weer wat rustiger, en kwam er een heel klein beetje ademruimte in m’n hoofd. Ik besloot te proberen om mezelf terug te ‘activeren’ met het oog op deze editie van Let’ Sti(c)k together, eentje die me erg aanspreekt omwille van het ‘Belgische’ karakter ervan. Het was Marjolein van de blog Flaflinko die deze maandelijkse naai-uitdaging bedacht, en net zij had deze maand een feestje te vieren op haar blog. De hele maand stond in het teken van Belgische creaties, en dat was meer dan de moeite. We mogen zo trots zijn op wat ons kleine landje te bieden heeft op naaivlak!!! Zeker nu we zo ver weg wonen, voel ik me nog extra trots daarop!
Ik gaf mezelf de ruimte om het te bekijken, of ik echt gestart raakte. No pressure… Het ging een pak trager dan anders, al had dat ook wel te maken met alle dingen die we nog moesten regelen voor mijn mini-trip naar Trinidad het voorbije weekend. Er zitten maar 24 uren in een dag, en die zijn rap voorbij met kids in huis en veel gedoe aan je hoofd! Maar kijk, het is toch af geraakt 😉 Op de valreep, want de laatste borduursels werden er op hotel in Trinidad op genaaid, en de foto’s konden pas maandag in de late namiddag (eerder vroege avond!) genomen worden toen ik mijn twee lieve schatjes na 3 dagen terug zag! Dankjewel Marjolein dat ik dus met een dagje vertraging mocht bloggen!

De uitdaging was deze keer:

• Belgisch patroon
• Een patroon dat je nog nooit gebruikte
• OF je lievelingspatroon hacken

Ik wist meteen wat het zou worden: Feliz!

Het laatste patronenkindje van Straightgrain was voor mij onweerstaanbaar… Liefde op het eerste gezicht! Ik denk niet dat ik al 1 Felizjurk of top gezien heb die ik niet geweldig vond. Tijdens het zoeken van een stofje voor een ander project al een hele tijd geleden, was mijn oog gevallen op een linnen-achtige stof die ik al een eeuwigheid in mijn kast heb liggen. Ook Belgisch, van bij Mondepot. Alleen geen idee meer van welk merk. Ikzelf sta absoluut niet met deze kleuren, maar ik heb gelukkig een compleet ander type in huis met mijn blonde prinses, die zo schoon is in pastellekes en zo. En ik vind het patroontje ook echt op haar lijf geschreven. Dromerig en los en een beetje wild, bohemian, romantisch ook, lief, en toch ook wat anders dan anders. Het klikt gewoon met Sia.

Op basis van de maattabel koos ik maat 7 jaar voor Sia. Ze zat tussen 6 en 7 en ik heb dan liever dat het haar nog wat langer past. Ik moet wel zeggen dat het echt nog best ruim is, maar ik durf te denken dat het patroontje ook los en ruimvallend bedoeld is. Het was ook echt te lang, ofschoon ze 122 cm is. Maar dat heb ik opgelost door het heel breed om te zomen onderaan. Als ze even hard blijft groeien als de voorbije 2 jaar, zal ik die er binnen een paar maanden weer uit kunnen halen om het terug wat langer te maken. Ze zal er in elk geval nog lang plezier van hebben 😊 Winterkleren zullen we in Trinidad niet veel nodig hebben, dus ik ga ook geen tijd steken in het maken daarvan.

Het stofje was om heel eerlijk te zijn echt geen pretje om mee te werken, vooral het knippen was een ramp. Dat bleef niet liggen en verschoof, ik kreeg het niet goed plat genoeg waardoor de patroondelen uitgerokken werden op de stof en zo. Enfin, ik kan het niet goed uitleggen, maar het was niet zo ideaal om weer terug ‘zin’ te krijgen om erin te vliegen. Maar dat zijn we intussen ook weer vergeten gelukkig 😉 Hoewel ik van plan was om de ruchemouwen te maken, koos ik -na consultatie met de toekomstige draagster van het jurkje- voor de aangeknipte mouwtjes. De stof leek me namelijk niet ideaal voor ruches. Ze is wel heel goed doorvallend, maar ook ietsje zwaarder en ik had geen idee hoe dat zou vallen. Ik had geen zin in risico’s, en speelde dus op veilig. En daar heb ik geen spijt van! Het jurkje zat ook echt snel in elkaar, en is helemaal niet moeilijk om te maken in deze opties. Ook mooi meegenomen 😉

Zoals jullie in mijn vorige blogpost al konden zien, en ook eerder al konden lezen en zien, ben ik echt helemaal dol op borduursels. Ik kan er gewoon simpelweg niet aan weerstaan. Het is zover gekomen dat ik intussen precies bij alle kledingstukken iets wil borduren 😉 Al die wilde plannetjes in mijn hoofd… als ik eens wat meer tijd had! 😉 Maar ook bij deze jurk kon ik het natuurlijk niet laten… Al heb ik best lang m’n hoofd gebroken over wat ik precies wilde…

Ik koos uiteindelijk voor het woord ‘dreamer’, geborduurd in het geschrift van Sia zelf, en dat in een wolk van sterren… Voor mijn kleine dromerige meid. Dat ze mag en kan blijven dromen… en zoveel meer… Of zoals de tekst van het liedje ‘Si tu savais’ van Axelle Red, dat we achteraan op haar geboorteboekje (haar ‘kaartje’ was een boekje) hadden gezet, zegt:

De gouden gloed van de avondzon bleek een schot in de roos voor de foto’s. Ik nam er zoveel dat het extreem moeilijk om kiezen was. Het zijn er dus nogal veel, maar ach… ze zijn zo schoon 😉

As you probably have noticed, there has been very little activity here on this blog. Even though I had and have a lot of sewing-stuff yet to be blogged about. But I just couldn’t find the time and/or energy. Our upcoming move to Trinidad (I meant to blog about it but did not yet get to doing it… I promise to do that soon!) really took all my energy and the situation sometimes has been quite overwhelming.  I guess that explains for the long silence here. It also made it virtually impossible to do any sewing at all, even though I probably could have made time for it. I just couldn’t. Somewhere I did feel like I wanted to do something, or even ‘had to’, if only to get my mind off the things that caused me stress, or to do something I knew would make me feel good. But I just couldn’t bring myself to it.

BUT… the last 2-3 weeks things calmed down a bit, and the consequence was that my head cleared up a bit, giving me some more mental space again. I decided to try to ‘activate’ myself again, with the new edition of Let’s Sti©k together in mind, an edition that really speaks to me because of the Belgian character. It was Marjolein from the blog Flaflinko who invented this monthly sewing challenge, and she had something to celebrate on her blog this month! The whole month (almost 😉) all her sewing was focused on Belgian patterns, to honor the great pattern and fabric makers we have in our little country. And man, we sure can be proud of what we have to offer to the worldwide sewing community! Now that I’m living so far away, I even feel prouder, being much more aware of my own roots. So, I wanted to try to join in, but took it easy, no pressure. Things went a lot slower than my usual sewing pace. The fact that we had a lot to arrange for my short trip to Trinidad last weekend, also had something to do with that. There are only 24 hours a day, and those hours pass by very quickly when you have a lot of things on your mind and kids who need food and attention running around in the house. But hey, I got the job done! Last minute, to be honest… I finished the embroidery in my hotel room in Trinidad, and the pictures had to be taken on Monday early evening, immediately after seeing my daughters back after my 3 days away. So in reality I am a day late with the challenge, so thank you Marjolein for still allowing me to join in!

This time the challenge was this:

• Belgian pattern
• Either a pattern that you have never used before
• OR you hack your favorite patter

I instantly knew what I wanted to make: Feliz! The latest pattern baby by Straightgrain was love at first sight for me! I don’t think I have seen 1 Feliz top or dress that I did not like. I chose a fabric that I have had for ages in my stash, it looks and feels like linen, only more loose, so not sure what it is exactly. It is also a Belgian fabric, purchased at Mondepot, but I don’t remember the exact brand. The colors of it really don’t do me any favors, but they are just perfect for my blue-eyed blondie, and they will even be better on her when she gets some more sun again, when we will be in Trinidad 😊 I also think the style of pattern itself suits her so well. A bit dreamy, loose, a little wild, bohemian, and also romantic and sweet at the same time. It just ‘clicks’ with Sia, I guess.

Based on the measurements and charts I chose size 7y for Sia. Her chest circumference was in between size 6 and 7 and I rather have the dress fit her a little longer. I must admit it is however a bit too wide maybe, but since the design is -in my opinion- a little wide as well, I don’t mind too much. The dress was too long as well, although Sia measures 122cm. But I made a very wide seam, which I can take out again if she keeps on growing as fast as she has done over the last few months. So these things in mind, let’s hope she will have lots of pleasure of this dress 😉 We definitely won’t be needing any warm winter clothing in Trinidad, so I won’t be wasting my time on making those.

The fabric wasn’t really a pleasure to work with, to be honest. Especially tracing the pattern and cutting the fabric was almost a disaster. Not very ideal for staying motivated after so much time. But luckily I persisted a little more 😉 I originally had planned on making the flutter sleeves, but decided on making the dolmansleeves because even though it had a lot of drape, the fabric might have been a little too heavy to have nice flutter sleeves. I don’t have any regrets about that choice, as I love the final look. The dress with these options was also very easy and quick to make. Always nice to know, right?

As you might have read and/or seen in one of my previous posts, and also before that post, I adore embroidery. I just simply can’t resist it, I’m always drawn to it. It even came that far that I start imagining embroidery on all clothing I want to make! All these wild plans in my head… if only I had a little more time! 😉 So it shouldn’t be a surprise that I wanted to add a little embroidery here as well. It took me a long time to decide on what I wanted. I ended up with choosing the word ‘dreamer’ in Sia’s own handwriting, surrounded by stars. For my little dreamy girl. May she always keep on dreaming… and so much more! Or as the lyrics of the song ‘si tu savais’ by Axelle Red go, a song which we had put on the back of the little birth announcement book for Sia:

Let’s sti(c)k together 3 – zon, zee & strand: riley rashguards

Voor de derde editie van de Let’s Sti(c)k together challenge werd er gewerkt met een thema in plaats van met drie criteria. Het thema dat met grote voorsprong de meeste stemmen haalde, was ‘zon, zee, strand’, wat misschien wel voor de hand lag met de zomer in aantocht. Het kwam ook goed uit, want op die ellenlange naailijst van mij, stond o.a. nog het maken van ‘rashguards’ voor de meisjes. Geen overbodige luxe in de brandende zon hier, die dezer dagen gemiddeld rond de 30 graden warm is. En met een vakantie in Belize in het vooruitzicht, zullen ze ook wel van pas komen 😉 Aan zon en zee en strand zal er daar geen gebrek zijn!

Toen ik een tijdje geleden in een facebookgroepje zag dat een patroonontwerper genaamd Little Finch Patterns ermee zou stoppen, en al haar patronen op craftsy aan 2 dollar (1,75 euro) te koop stonden (en nog steeds staan!!), kon ik er niet aan weerstaan om een kijkje te gaan nemen… En daar stond zowaar een patroontje voor zo’n rashguard bij. Klik klik, winkelmandje in, en weer een plannetje bij op het lijstje. Voor de stofjes moest ik niet nadenken, want die lagen al een klein jaartje te blinken in m’n voorraad. Ik had namelijk in een overmoedige bui (lees: en ook wel een beetje tijdens een aanval van koopwoede) twee hele leuke zwemstofjes gekocht in een echte walhalla-webwinkel in Frankrijk, LaPandaLoveFabrics (wees gewaarschuwd: klikken op eigen risico!). Maar dit is natuurlijk het bewijs dat een voorraadje stoffen altijd van pas komt 😉

Stofje, patroon, en de naai-uitdaging als spreekwoordelijke schop onder m’n kont: ik kon beginnen 🙂

Voor Sia gebruikte ik een eenhoornstofje gecombineerd met haar lievelingskleur blauw. Voor Rosanne, als echte panda-lover, het pandastofje. Ze kozen allebei zelf, dat heb ik intussen geleerd. Ik wilde voor Rosanne combineren met een roze zwemstofje, maar dat bleek nogal heel doorzichtig, dus gebruikte ik hetzelfde pandastofje voor de broek, en combineerde ik met zwart. Dat heeft meteen ook wat meer pit, net zoals die driejarige in het pakje zelf.

Over het patroontje ben ik, laat ons zeggen, half tevreden. De pasvorm is perfect. Voor Rosanne nam ik maat 3T, en voor Sia maat 6. Beiden zitten strak maar goed. Alleen Sia haar broekje bleek helemaal af te zakken toen ze het daarstraks in het zwembad aanhad, maar bij nader inzien had ze voor het bovenstuk weliswaar maat 6 nodig, maar kon ze voor de broek maat 5 gebruiken. Mijn fout dus. Het patroon is ontworpen voor dit soort stoffen, en dat zit dus goed. Het omvat zowel het bovenstuk als het broekje, een short en een lange broek versie. Dat vind ik persoonlijk best veel waar voor je geld 🙂

Waar ik wat minder tevreden over was, was dat het gewoon niet volledig duidelijk was. Je had het gissen naar of het patroon op A4 of op letter afgedrukt moest worden, en of je aan iets bepaald moest denken bij het afdrukken. Er stond wel bij hoeveel de naadwaarde was, maar het was me niet duidelijk of die inbegrepen was in het patroon, en ook was -behalve voor het bovenstuk, nergens te zien hoe de papieren aan mekaar geplakt moesten worden, wat me een hoop gepuzzel opleverde. Voor zij die het patroon zouden overwegen, wat voor de mini-prijs misschien wel de moeite waard is: er is een deel van het patroon in letter-formaat (US) en een deel in A4, al staat dat nergens in de handleiding. Je ziet ergens in de helft van de patroondelen een pagina waarop staat waar je moet beginnen printen voor A4. De naadwaarde is inbegrepen (heb ik gevraagd aan de ontwerpster). En de patroondelen zijn eerst voor de top (daar staat wel een tekening bij hoe ze aan mekaar moeten), dan de volgende 4 pagina’s zijn voor- en achterkant van een broekje, en alle volgende pagina’s zijn de patroondelen voor de short tesamen met lange broek. Zeker in kleur afdrukken, want anders weet ik niet of je het makkelijk gaat kunnen bijeen puzzelen…

Het maken ging best vlot, al had ik verdomd veel pech door spoelen die net op waren tijdens een tweelingstiksel, draad die brak, en dat soort vervelende toestanden. Maar deze zwemstof naaide een pak vlotter dan die van mijn eerste zwemstof-ervaring, amai! Ik denk dat er dus toch een kwaliteitsverschil moet zijn, ofwel ligt het aan de specifieke samenstelling van de stof (zou ik nog eens moeten opzoeken). De stof gleed een heel pak minder, bijna niet zelfs, en was heel aangenaam te verwerken. Wat een verschil met de vorige keer! De stof is ook heel stevig. Jammer genoeg geldt dat dus niet zo voor de stof van het broekje van Sia, want na een eerste zwembeurt ziet die er al niet meer zo fraai uit door al dat geschuif en gespeel. ’t Is dus een geluk bij een ongeluk dat het niet past, want ik moet er toch een nieuw maken 😉

Het broekje is overigens een beetje langer dan de short-versie. Ik heb het ook gevoerd. Daarvoor stond ook niet echt een uitleg voor de afwerking. Bij Sia is het daardoor zichtbaar onder het broekje, wat me wel wat stoort. Bij Rosanne heb ik daarom de voering even lang geknipt als het broekje, en de rand zit in de zoom van de buitenstof, zodat die niet zichtbaar is.

De meisjes waren heel blij met hun pakjes, en konden niet wachten om ze aan te doen om te gaan zwemmen! Het is zo leuk als ze wel 10 keer dankjewel komen zeggen, en als je daar aan het zwembad staat met je dochtertjes en alledrie een zelfgemaakt badpak aan hebt! Ik kan het iedereen aanraden na deze tweede zwemstof-poging 😉

Geen zwembadfoto’s trouwens, want ik realiseerde me gelukkig op tijd dat die twee nooit te houden zijn als ze binnen de 50 meter van een zwembad zijn. No way dat die nog zouden poseren! Gelukkig zagen ze een kleine fotoshoot thuis nog wel zitten. Sia is zot van de film Moana, waarvan ze toevallig ook een hoofdtelefoon had gekregen, en waarvan de muziek op mijn gsm staat. Ze doet niet liever dan daarnaar luisteren en meezingen. Kleine meisjes worden groot…

For the third edition of the  Let’s Sti(c)k together challenge we choose a theme instead of 3 criteria. There was one theme that had the most votes by far: sun, sea, beach. Maybe not very surprising given summer has finally arrived 🙂 I was happy wit this theme, because I had some things on my sewing list that fitted very well into it. Like making rashguards. No unnecessary luxury, given the burning sun here these days! And with a vacation to Belize coming up, they will come in handy too! We will definitely not be short of sun, sea, and beaches there!

A while ago I had seen in a facebook group that a pattern designer called Little Finch Patterns, would stop her business, and all her patterns would be forever listed for only 2 dollars on craftsy. I couldn’t resist having a look… And there I saw this pattern for a rashguard (amongst others). So I clicked and clicked and there I had bought yet another pattern 😉 And my sewing list grew again a little longer 😉 I did not have to think twice about the fabrics. Last year I had bought 2 gorgeous swim fabrics in a french online fabric walhalla called LaPandaLoveFabrics (I warn you: clicking on your own risk!). But this only proves that having a fabric stash always comes in handy, no? 😉

Fabric, pattern, and a sewing challenge as a figurally speaking kick under the but (is that a saying in English too??): I could start!

For Sia I used a unicorn fabric combined with her favorite color blue. For Rosanne, a die-hard panda-lover, I used the panda fabric, obviously. Both had picked their own fabric, by the way. I’ve learned my lesson already 😉 I wanted to combine the panda fabric with a pink solid, but that fabric was so sheer I couldn’t really use it. So I decided to take the same panda fabric for the shorts and combine the top with black. Gives a bit more character to it, something that suits this little 3 year old perfect 🙂

About the pattern: I am, let’s say, semi-happy. I have no complaints whatsoever about the fit. The fit is just spot-on! The rashguards are very fitted, but in a good way, as supposed I guess. Rosanne is a size 3T, and Sia size 6. Only Sia’s shorts were not tight enough, so we noticed when swimming with it today. But that was my own mistake. She needed a size 6 on the top, but could have done with size 5 on the hips, which would probably have been perfect. So I really think the sizing and fit of the pattern is perfect. The pattern includes a top, bottom briefs, shorts and pants. I think that is good value for your money!

The thing that I wasn’t too happy about, is that it just lacked information. I had no idea whether it was supposed to be printed on letter format or A4, and there were no printing instructions. I found what the seam allowance was, but not whether or not it was included in the pattern pieces. Also there was no clue about how to assemble the pattern pages, except for the top pieces. So if you would be interested in this pattern, which you might be given the low price of it, here is what I found: part of the pattern pieces are in letter and somewhere in the middle you can find a page that tells you all the next pages are for A4 printing. The seam allowances are included (I asked the designer). And after the top pattern pieces, you find 4 pages for the bottom briefs, and then all the pages for the shorts and pants. You better print in color, as otherwise assembling might be a real challenge.

The sewing went smoothly, although I had quite a lot of bad luck, with thread breaking, thread finished while making a twin stitch, and so on. But besides that, I was so relieved the sewing went so much easier than my first time sewing swim fabric. This fabric was much less slippery, and also thicker than the first one. So either the quality of the fabric is different, or the fabric composition is, I might have to look into that. But it was so much more fun to sew! The blue solid swim fabric might not be the best quality either, to be honest. After only one swimming pool visit, it has a lot of scratches and visible damage, so it’s maybe a good thing after all that the shorts don’t fit her well, as I now have one extra reason to make her a new pair.

The shorts are by the way longer than the shorts pattern is. I just lengthened it a bit. I also lined it. There wasn’t a clear explanation about how to finish the lining, and I ended up with a slightly visible lining for Sia’s shorts, which is not really a problem but I would have liked it better if it weren’t visible. For Rosanne I cut the lining almost as long as the outer fabric, and the seam of the lining is hidden in the seam of the outer fabric. 

The girls both were really happy with their rashguards, and couldn’t wait to put it on to go to the swimming pool! I was really happy when they said thank you about 10 times, and I felt proud when I saw myself with them at the pool, all 3 of us in a homemade bathing suit! 

No pool pictures by the way. I luckily realized on time that there would be no way they would pose for me when there is a swimming pool within reach! Luckily they were in for a little photoshoot at home! Sia is completely in love with the movie Moana, listening to the music on my phone every possible moment, singing along with the songs, … She seems so big when she has these headphones on! Little girls get big…

Let’s Sti(c)k together – part 2, dit is Belgisch!

Hier zijn we met de tweede editie van Let’s Sti(c)k Together, een gezamenlijke naai-uitdaging waaraan een heleboel Belgische bloggers deelnemen. Marjolein van Flaflinko bedacht deze uitdaging, geïnspireerd door de sew challenge van Davina. Elke maand worden een heleboel criteria (of thema’s) voorgesteld, waaruit iedereen zijn favorieten kiest. Met de drie meest gekozen criteria gaat iedereen dan aan de slag. Hier kan je zien wat ik voor de eerste editie maakte, en vandaag toon ik jullie mijn resultaat van editie twee!

De criteria waren deze keer:

• dit is Belgisch
• werken met restjes/recyclage/…
• a touch of bling

Ik was vooral in de wolken over het criterium ‘Belgisch’, niet alleen omdat dit heel erg ruim is, maar ook omdat ik best trots ben op wat we in ons kleine landje allemaal aan creativiteit hebben op vlak van naaien. Geweldige patroonontwerpsters, supertoffe tijdschriften, prachtige stoffen van Belgische makelij, enz. Ik vond het dus vooral moeilijk om op dat vlak knopen door te hakken. Eens dat gebeurd was, moest ik maar gewoon door m’n restjes gaan en nadenken over hoe ik daar blingbling in kon verwerken.

Eigenlijk ging het kiezen al bij al nog best snel. Ik wilde ofwel een Tulip top of jurk maken, ofwel de Miss Madeline top, die ik vorig jaar had willen maken maar waar ik nooit toe gekomen was. Ik blijf een beetje verliefd op het Tulip patroon van Kaatjenaaisels & With Love By Eva, en ben zo blij dat m’n beide meisjes nog altijd in hun Tulipjes passen. Als ze dat aanhebben, krijg ik gegarandeerd complimentjes. De Miss Madeline top vind ik ook een supertof patroon, en leek me bovendien een relatief snel projectje. Uiteindelijk gaf dat de doorslag, want ik kwam in tijdgebrek en het moest dus relatief snel gaan. Die Tulip komt er hopelijk nog wel van 😉

Ik kan met trots zeggen dat letterlijk alles aan de top Belgisch is, zowel alle gebruikte stofjes als het patroon. De voorkant is een restje van de stof van Finch Fabrics die ik gebruikte voor deze Geneva Cardigan, de achterkant een restje effen witte tricot van Fragile, een Belgisch kledingmerk. Voor het gevlochten lint, gebruikte ik een stuk zilveren en glinsterende stof, ook van Fragile. Alle criteria kunnen dus afgevinkt worden met deze top! De top zat ook vlotjes in mekaar. Alleen denk ik dat het lint een beetje te dik gevlochten was, zodat het net iets te strak door het tunneltje van de voorkant gaat. Ach ja, als het dat maar is.

Het bleef echter niet bij een top alleen. Ik had niet zo gek veel van die blingbling stof, en heb een redelijk nieuw ‘probleempje’. Waar ik recent nog verkondigde dat Sia vooral shorten draagt en niet zo gek veel jurkjes en rokjes, wilt ze sinds kort ineens bijna alleen nog maar rokjes hebben! Van een ommekeer gesproken, en eentje waar ik niet helemaal op voorzien ben… Bovendien wilt ze dan wel rokjes, zwier, jurkjes, … aandoen, ze blijft tegelijk dol op klimmen, hangen, wild doen, … en in het best wel preutse Amerika zijn ze niet zo happig op zichtbare onderbroekjes en dergelijke. Dus ‘bedacht’ ik de ideale combinatie: een zwierrokje met een broekje erin verwerkt 🙂 En dat in een blingbling stofje, deze mama heeft gescoord!

Als patroontje nam ik de zwierrok die bij de Miss Madeline als gratis extraatje wordt aangeboden, tesamen met de Viola legging uit La Maison Victor, die ik uiteraard veeeeeel korter heb gemaakt. Die twee – Belgische, jawel – patroontjes pasten perfect op mekaar. Enige waar ik geen rekening mee had gehouden, was dat als ik er nog een rek in moest maken bovenaan, vooral het rokdeel nogal kort viel. Ik heb dat opgelost door er biaisgewijs een hele band aan te zetten met een rek erin. Een heupband dus eigenlijk. Het was wel wat gepruts om dat nog een beetje mooi gedaan te krijgen, maar ik ben een tevreden mens 🙂 Met een tevreden dochter!

Maxi zwiergehalte ook!

Last minute klaar zijn betekent ook niet veel tijd voor foto’s. Als je dan het enige zonnig momentje van de dag mist, en het voor de rest enkel maar regen is, waardoor onze andere plannen, met name een wandeling in een natuurgebied hier niet zo ver vandaan, in het water vallen, tja… Dan moet een mens al eens improviseren. Daardoor staat er in ons klein livingske nu een soort tipi met wat bamboestokken voor in de tuin, die we dan maar als foto-achtergrond probeerden te gebruiken, net als de play d’oh pony’s die als accessoire moesten dienen, en de papa die een beetje ongepland eigenlijk ook een soort fotoshoot accessoire werd… Zo hadden wij weliswaar een best gezellig dagje, maar mooie foto’s leverde het absoluut niet op helaas… 🙂

Enneh… Moest er interesse in zijn, wil ik dat rokje met broekje erin best nog eens opnieuw maken en er wat fotootjes van nemen voor een kleine tutorial. Geef maar een gil in de reacties dan 😉

So here we are with the 2nd edition of  Let’s Sti(c)k Together, a sewing challenge that I am joining together with a whole bunch of Belgian bloggers. Marjolein, the lady behind the blog Flaflinko invented this challenge, inspired by the sew challenge by Davina. Every month a lot of criteria are proposed, and everyone can choose favorites. The 3 most chosen criteria are the ones to be used by every participant that month. Here you can see what I made for the first edition, and today I’m showing you the result of the 2nd edition.

These were the criteria this time:

• this is belgian
• working with scraps or recycling fabric
• a touch of ‘bling’ (sparkle)

I especially liked the criterium ‘belgian’, not only because it is very broad, but also because I’m proud of the amount of (sewing) creativity we have to offer in our little country. We have great pattern designers, stylish and modern and inspiring sewing magazines, fabulous fabrics made and/or designed by Belgians, and so on. So the hardest part might have been to make choices out of that whole variety! Once that was done, I just had to go through my leftovers and think about a way to add some ‘blingbling’ to it.

To be honest, for once the choice was rather quickly made. I wanted to make either a Tulip top or dress, or the Miss Madeline top, that I had wanted to sew last year but never got to. I still am madly in love with the Tulip pattern by Kaatjenaaisels and With Love by Eva, and am so happy my girls still fit in their Tulip dresses. Whenever they wear it, I ALWAYS get compliments! I also really like the design of the Miss Madeline top/dress, and it seemed like a very quick project. That’s what made me decide to go for it, since I got in a bit of time pressure… Hopefully this Tulip will eventually be made as well 😉

I am proud to say that literally everything about this top is Belgian: all fabrics used, and the pattern. The front panel is a leftover of the fabric by Finch Fabrics that I used for this Geneva Cardigan, the back is a leftover piece of solid white jersey by Fragile, a Belgian clothing brand whose fabrics are sold by Belgian webshop Mondepot. For the braided necktie (is that a right translation? sorry I don’t know!) I used a piece of shiny silver fabric, also from Fragile. So I can check off all 3 criteria in this top, yay! The top came together fairly easy. I only think the braid is a bit too thick, I should have pulled a bit harder to make it more flat and the tunnel on the top of the front wouldn’t be so thick. But well, if that is all… 😉

I didn’t stop with the top alone. I did not have so many of this silver fabric, and am having a rather new little ‘problem’. While I recently wrote here that Sia mainly wore shorts and tops in summer, she recently, all of a sudden, made a 180 degree turn and now almost only wants to wear skirts, dresses, all with as much twirl factor as possible. But at the same time she still wants to climb trees, be wild, hang on branches, … Since I kind of have the impression that here in the USA people are a little more sensitive to anything a little too naked, these skirts do not always give the coverage we would like. So I thought I could try to make a built-in (short) legging in a twirly skirt. All that in a ‘blingbling’ fabric! Yep, this mommy scored big time 😉

I used the add-on twirly skirt option for the Miss Madeline pattern, together with a pattern for leggings out of a Belgian sewing magazine called La Maison Victor. I obviously shortened the leggings very much. Those 2 -Belgian- patterns were a perfect match to each other, I didn’t have to adjust the length of the waist at all. The only thing I forgot about, was that I had needed to add some length on the skirt because there was no extra fabric for inserting elastic. So I created a bias-like waistband, and added elastic in it, and stitched it on the skirt and leggings. It was a bit messy, but I still am happy with the result, and my daughter is even happier!

Last minute sewing also means not having much time to take pictures. If you then miss the only sunny moment of the whole day, and the rest of the day only gives you rain, making our plans for the day (a walk in a nearby nature parc) rather impossible, well… then you just have to improvise. That means we now have an improvised tipi tent in our small living room, play d’oh ponies are the photo props of the day, and even daddy kind of became a picture accessory… I can say we had a cosy day after all, but that doesn’t make these pictures any better unfortunately… So you’ll have to do with these rather ugly lighted and colored pictures… 😉

P.S. If anyone would be interested, I can always make this skirt with built-in leggings again and make some pictures of the making process as a sort of tutorial… Just give a shout in the comments then 😉

Let’s sti(c)k together 1: Burda 7828

De recente editie van de Sew Challenge inspireerde Marjolein van de supertoffe blog Flaflinko tot een nieuw soort challenge, die ‘Let’s Sti(c)k together’ gedoopt werd. Elke maand wordt er in een facebookgroep gekoppeld aan deze uitdaging een lijst gemaakt met mogelijke criteria, waarop iedereen dan kan stemmen. De drie populairste criteria zijn dan diegenen die je moet gebruiken. Ieder is vrij om al dan niet mee te doen, het moet niet elke maand. Leukleuk dacht ik zo bij mezelf, en nog meer toen de criteria duidelijk werden:

• een ongebruikt patroon uit je voorraad
• een stof die al minstens aan jaar in je kast ligt
• zomer

Van die eerste twee heb ik namelijk heler stapels, en voor het derde criterium kan ik echt nog veel gebruiken, voor de (letterlijk) hete zomers hier. Mijn keuze was echter snel gemaakt. De Burda 7828 stond namelijk al heel erg lang op mijn naailijstje, en nog meer nadat de 2 King Louie kleedjes die ik heb, vorige zomer de kast amper zagen.

Ooit wilde ik er al eens aan beginnen en tekende ik het patroon over in mijn maat, maar verder dan dat was ik niet geraakt. Nu vatte ik dus de koe bij de horens en ging ik ervoor. Ik besloot, gezien ik wel wat tijd had, om een testversie te maken, om last minute teleurstellingen te vermijden. Ik volgde voor die eerste versie volledig de werkelijk uitstekende handleiding van Mina Dotter en nam de maat die ik volgens de tabel, op basis van borstomtrek, moest nemen, nl. 38. Hoewel ik op de taille en heupen (een pak) breder ben dan dat, verbreedde ik niet en rekende ik op de stretch van de stof.

Ik gebruikte een stofje dat al heeeeeeeel erg lang in mijn stoffenkast ligt, van Fragile, ooit gekocht bij MonDepot. Om de een of andere reden vond ik het niet meer zo helemaal je-dat. Ideaal voor een testjurk dus.

Ik ben op zich tevreden, en ik denk dat ik het zeker wel zal dragen, maar het kon echt wel beter. Ik vind de V-hals te hoog en te dicht, de schouders een beetje te breed, en de naadband die ik aan de borstdelen gestreken had, stoorde me. Het irriteerde me ook een beetje dat die 2 borstdelen mekaar niet helemaal overlappen. Ik vond verder dat het iets meer aansluitend mocht zijn aan de schouders en borst. Om dat een beetje te verhelpen, heb ik de zijnaden nog ingenomen aan beide kanten. Ik heb ineens ook een ferm stuk afgedaan aan de zoom. Van lange stelten ben ik namelijk helaas niet voorzien 😉

Voor versie 2 wilde ik een diepere halsuitsnijding, geen mouwtjes, een maatje kleiner aan het bovenlijf, en ook iets anders, met name plooikes in de zijkant. Daarvoor schreef Yerasi een uitstekende tutorial, joepie! Na een beetje aanpassen aan het patroon, vloog ik er weer in.

De aanpassingen:

• voor het bovenlijf nam ik een maatje kleiner, maar ik verbreedde wel naar de 38 van in de taille
• naar goed gevoel de halslijn dieper gemaakt en smaller aan de schouders, dit bij het L-voorpand, hetgene je gebruikt voor de aangepaste versie van deze jurk te maken.
• datzelfde L-voorpand patroondeel verlengde ik ook naar de zijnaad toe, zodat het in de zijnaad zou terecht komen en niet ergens op de borst.
• de neklijn aan de achterzijde werd ook wat uitgediept om aan te passen aan de voorzijde,
• de mouw gewoon weglaten en omzomen,
• het rugpand werd in 1 deel geknipt,
• het voorpand werd nu in 2 i.p.v. 3 delen: bij de oorspronkelijke Burda 7828 heb je een L-voorpand en een R-voorpand, en bij de aangepaste versie gebruik je enkel het L-voorpand (patroondeel 2) en spiegel je dat. Bij deze versie plakte ik dat L-voorpand aan het onderste deel van de voorkant, om zo 1 voorpand te krijgen. Het deel eronder, het gespiegelde deel dus, maakte ik langer opdat het niet zou stroppen op of net onder de borsten, en zoals al gezegd zorgde ik er ook voor dat het breder was zodat het in de zijnaad terecht zou komen.
• ik gebruikte VORMBAND in plaats van naadband, een wereld van verschil!! Ik wist in feite niet goed wat het verschil was, maar nu dus wel…

Dat klinkt misschien allemaal wel ingewikkeld, maar ik zeg u met de hand op het hart dat het dat niet is! Het wijst echt zichzelf uit! Eigenlijk zijn wij toch nogal gezegend, dacht ik zo bij mezelf, met zoveel fantastische tutorials in ons Belgische bloglandje! Echt waar, voor ik het wist, zat het tweede exemplaar ineen!

Van deze ben ik eigenlijk echt heel erg tevreden, en ik weet wel heel zeker dat dit jurkje heel veel uit de kast gaat komen! Niet alleen omdat het me beter en aangenamer zit, maar ook wel omdat ik dit stofje echt geweldig mooi vind. Alleen was de kleur een beetje moeilijk vast te leggen, zo blijkt.

Aan dit stofje hangt trouwens ook ietwat onnozel verhaal vast. Ik heb dat ooit, al een hele tijd geleden, in Amerika gekocht, bij Fabricworm, toen er daar een mega-sale was. Ik had zo wel wat zitten uitzoeken over kosten en zo, maar blijkbaar helemaal niet tegoei, want op 35€ douanekosten had ik niet gerekend. Kort nadat ik het gekocht had, zag ik datzelfde stofje binnenkomen bij o.a. BelleLien, vlakbij mij thuis. Met alle kosten erbij, had ik het evengoed daar kunnen bestellen… En extra onnozel is natuurlijk dat ik dat nu pas gebruik als ik note benen zelf in Amerika woon. Ach ja…

Ik ben alleszins heel blij met deze resultaten! Op naar de volgende editie 😉

The recent edition of the sew challenge inspired Marjolein from the blog Flaflinko (check it out!!) to invent a new kind of challenge, which she named ‘Let’s sti(c)k together’. In dutch ‘stik’ means ‘stitch’, so this name fitted the purpose really well! Every month there is a list with possible criteria made in a facebook group of the challenge, and everyone can vote. The 3 most popular criteria are the ones everyone must use. You can decide every month again whether you want to participate or not. I really liked this idea, and even liked it better when the criteria became clear:

• an unused pattern you have laying around
• a fabric that is in your stash for at least a year
• summer

I have plenty of the first 2 (oops), and am really in need for more summer clothing, so this came at a good time! I very quickly knew I wanted to make this dress, the Burda 7828, which is very popular in Belgium in a slightly changed version. There is a very detailed photo tutorial about how to change it, so even without knowing dutch, one should be able to easily follow it. It all comes down to use pattern piece 2, one of the front pattern pieces (the left front panel), 2 times, while mirroring it, instead of using  2 different front pieces (right and left). This version is known to resemble the dress style of a much popular brand of clothes ‘King Louie’, and it indeed resembles my 2 most worn dresses last summer. I once, even before moving to the USA, had drawn the pattern pieces, but never got further than that, so this was the time to finally do that!

I decided to make a test version, to avoid last minute disappointment. I picked a purple-brown flowered fabric that has been laying in my stash like forever, and for some reason I did not like as much as I did before. Perfect to give it a try. I followed my size (based on chest) and the instructions of the tutorial closely. Although I am ok with it, and I will surely wear it, I think there was quite some room for improvement. I found the V-shaped collar too high, the shoulders a bit too wide, the seam tape irritated me on the breast, and some other minor things were not entirely as I had wished for. I made it smaller on the upper body and shorter as well.

For my 2nd version I wanted a deeper neckline, no sleeves, a better fit on the upper body, and I also wanted to try to add a little gathers on the side. Luckily another Belgian blogger, Yerasi wrote an excellent tutorial on that, also very detailed with pictures so very easy to understand and follow, even without knowing dutch.

These were my alterations:

• I sized down at the chest, going to my original size around the waist to the hips.
• I deepened the neckline and made the shoulders a bit more narrow, which I did on the left front panel, the one you use in the tutorial of this dress.
• I lengthened the same pattern piece so it would reach the side seams instead of ending on the chest.
• I also deepened the neckline on the back panel a bit, to fit the front panel at the shoulders.
• I left the sleeves away and just hemmed the armholes
• the back panel was cut in 1 piece
• the front panel was made out of 2 pieces instead of 3: with the original burda dress you have a left, a right, and a under front piece. With the adapted version you mirror one of the upper front pieces. In this version I taped the under front piece together with the left pattern piece I made, to have 1 front panel. That same left pattern piece I used too, but I lengthened it so it wouldn’t make a bump on the chest or right beneath the breasts.
• I used Bias tape instead of seam tape, what a difference!

This may all sound complicated, but I promise you that is not at all the case! It all goes very logical. I also feel kind of blessed with so many great Belgian bloggers who write these excellent tutorials!

I must say I am truly very happy with this 2nd dress, and am sure it will be worn a lot. Not only because the fit is better, but also because I really like this fabric, even though the color was hard to catch on camera. There is actually even a rather stupid story behind it. I purchased it at fabricworm quite some time ago, when they had a big sale. But I miscalculated the shipping and import taxes, and ended up paying more than I would have paid buying it in Belgium, where soon after my purchase I found it in a very nearby sewing shop… And even more ridiculous is the fact I’m using this fabric only now, when I live in the USA. But oh well… these things can happen, no? 😉
