Laure, again

De Laure jurk moet ik jullie niet meet voorstellen na mijn vorige bericht, en misschien zagen jullie ‘m ook wel her en der verschijnen op het wereldwijde web. Moeilijk is dat niet, zo’n pareltje als het is! Ik maakte dus al twee jurkversies met een qipao kraag, maar die strikkraag, ooooh… ook zo schoon!! Omdat de voorbije zomer me geleerd heeft dat Sia eigenlijk vaker shortjes met bloesjes draagt dan jurkjes, repte het idee om van die strikkraagjurk gewoon een bloesje te maken. En gezien de vreselijke blinde rits toestanden van de vorige keer, leek een knopenpad op de rug me ineens toch ook wel eens iets anders 😉

Dus zo gezegd zo gedaan. Lang moest ik ook niet nadenken over een stofje, want dit prachtige stofje van bij  Mondepot, van Lucy Has a Secret, lag naar mij te lonken 😉 Glanzend, vederlicht, met een beetje reliëf, en met diertjes die kriskras door mekaar staan, what’s not to love? 😉 Ik weet alleen niet helemaal zeker of het wel zo kindvriendelijk is, want het ziet er ietwat fragiel uit. Maar kom, time will tell… 🙂

Ik was niet zeker genoeg van mijn stuk om gewoon maar wat te doen voor de rug, dus nam ik het patroon en de uitleg van de Ishi jurk erbij, eveneens van Straightgrain. Die maakte ik al eens met een knopenpad op de rug, dus daar kon ik naar teruggrijpen. Eigenlijk kwam het erop neer dat ik bij beide zijden 4cm bijtekende voor de buitenstof, maar niet bij de voering. De voering, eveneens de effen double gauze van bij de vorige jurkjes, liet ik bewust wat korter, zodat die zeker niet zou komen piepen.

Ook bij deze blouse waren de foutjes talrijk. Erg geconcentreerd ben ik precies niet, mijn hoofd zit soms een beetje te vol denk ik, om helemaal logisch na te kunnen denken. Logica, nooit m’n sterkste kant geweest 🙂 Ik mat bv. niet na tot waar het voorpand zou komen en voegde gewoon 2,5cm naadwaarde toe. Dat bleek nog aan de korte kant, dus heb ik als oplossing een heel boordje aangenaaid om het te verlengen. Ik vind het wel nog iets hebben, al is het achteraan redelijk slordig.

Ik had wel de striklinten verlengd met 4cm, net zoals de achterpanden, maar had beter eerst eens gelezen in de handleiding, want dat was helemaal niet nodig. Ik raakte ook een knoopje kwijt, maar na heel wat gevloek bleek dat gewoon nog in het knoopsgatvoetje te zitten. Een van de knoopsgaatjes was eerst naar de verkeerde kant genaaid, oeps. En last but not least vind ik dat de versteviging van de strikkraag te zwaar is waardoor de strik eigenlijk niet mooi valt. Mijn vlieseline was op, dus had ik hier in een winkel gevraagd naar lichte versteviging, en dit meegekregen. Niet licht genoeg dus. Jammer maar helaas.

Enfin, om dus maar te zeggen dat dat hier allemaal echt niet zo vlotjes gaat als het misschien lijkt 🙂 Ik weet nog dat ik een hele tijd geleden (en nu nog soms vaak…) altijd zo vol bewondering was voor anderen, die nooit leken te sukkelen zoals ik. Nu troost ik mezelf met de gedachte dat dat waarschijnlijk allemaal ook wel een beetje de schijn is en dat ik heus wel niet de enige zal zijn die nu eens veel en dan eens wat minder sukkelt 🙂

Los van al die foutjes, zijn we in elk geval toch wel blij met deze blouse, en ben ik best content over hoe ik het ervan af heb gebracht met deze ‘hack’. En ook Sia was er blij mee, zoals -eerlijk is eerlijk- ze eigenlijk wel bijna altijd is. Op dat gebied heb ik met haar geen klagen! Kleine zus, dat is een ander paar mouwen 🙂

Zo, dat was het voorlopig voor de Laure jurk. Vrijdag kunnen jullie mijn versie van de Lena jurk zien, een gloednieuw èn gratis patroontje van de superleuke en redelijk nieuwe (maar zeker te volgen!!) blog Wensje, dat ik mee mocht testen. Intussen kan ik starten met het testen van een nieuw patroontje voor Coffee+Thread, de Polina jurk, en ben ik de eerste stapjes aan het zetten voor mijn uitdaging voor de sew challenge (zie hier mijn eerste deelname). Eens dat allemaal voorbij is, ga ik eventjes naaigewijs uitrusten en me terug even focussen op ons familieblogje over ons leventje in de USA. En op het leven zelf, dat ook…  Maar voor nu dus tot vrijdag 😉

I guess I don’t need to explain to you the Laure dress, after my last blogpost, and maybe you did see this pattern popping up all over the internet already. Wouldn’t be surprising given the beauty it is! I already made 2 dresses with a qipao collar, but since I was also so much in favor of the pussy bow, I wanted to make one of those too. However, Sia wore maybe more shirts with shorts last summer than she wore dresses, so I wanted to make a shirt rather than another dress. And since my blind zipper experiences lately weren’t that good, I wanted to use buttons to close the back instead of a zipper again. I didn’t dare to just start doing something, so I used the pattern and tutorial of the Ishi dress, also by Straightgrain, to make it. It actually all boils down to adding 4cm to each back pannel of the outer fabric, but not to the lining. I also let the lining shorter than the outside, so that it wouldn’t come peeping underneath the shirt.

I chose a gorgeous fabric I bought at a Belgian online fabric shop called Mondepot, a fabric from the also Belgian clothing brand Lucy Has a Secret. It has a luxurious shine on it, is very light and has a perfect drape, a little structure, and animals criss cross all over the fabric. What’s not to love about it? For the lining I used the same double gauze solid as for the Laure dresses. I admit I doubt whether it is very childfriendly, but time will tell… 😉

As I so often do, also with this shirt I made several mistakes. For example I didn’t measure the front panel, to see how long it would be, although I did add a bigger seam allowance. But it still wasn’t really long enough, so I added a border. It still looks nice in my opinion, but a bit messy on the back though. I did however lengthen the collar pieces, only to find out that it wasn’t necessary and I had to change them again. I seemed to have lost a button, only to find it after a long search back on the buttonhole sewing foot. I also sewed one buttonhole wrong. And last but not least I find the interfacing for the collar and bow to be too heavy, so that the bow doesn’t have the drape it should have. I don’t know anything about pellon and other interfacing used here in the USA, so just asked a light interfacing i the sewing shop. Too bad it isn’t exactly what I wanted after all. All this just to say that most things don’t always go as easy as they look. I used to admire so many others, thinking I was always struggling, but now I comfort myself with the thought that I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who makes (many) mistakes…

Besides those ‘details’ both Sia and I love the shirt. Although I must admit Sia isn’t difficult to please. Something that can’t be said of her little sister 🙂

So this will be it for the Laure dress for now. This friday you can see my version of the Lena dress, a brand new and free pattern by the relatively new but really very nice blog Wensje (which is Dutch for ‘little wish’).  I am about to start testing the newest pattern of Coffee+Thread, called the Polina dress, and then I’m preparing myself for the second edition of the sew challenge (here you can see what I made for the first edition). Busy weeks here, so after that I’m going to push the sewing pause button and concentrate on my other blog, about our life here in the USA for a little while. Laure Qipao twins

Dat het liefde op het eerste zicht was, met Laure, dat kan ik u zeggen. Alleen al de naam, want die doet me denken aan een van mijn liefste vriendinnetjes in België, ook mooi meegenomen. Ik zag eerst in een nieuwsbrief van een stoffenwinkel dat er een nieuw patroon gelanceerd was, en viel uit de lucht want dacht dat ik dat compleet gemist had. Wat wel zou kunnen omdat ik de laatste maanden eigenlijk helemaal niet meer veel blogs lees, of zo af en toe eens een inhaalbeweging doe. Ik dus meteen naar de blog van straightgrain, om daar te constateren dat ik helemaal niks gemist had want dat het patroon net die dag uitgekomen was. En om ook head over heels verliefd te worden op die qipao kraag en de strikkraag. Hupla, winkelmandje in ermee, en een weekje later lag dat papieren patroon hier in Amerika op mijn tafel! Als dat geen service is 🙂

Meestal laat ik dat allemaal wel wat liggen, ik ben door de band niet het type dat meteen in gang schiet bij een nieuw patroon. Er ligt altijd zoveel op m’n naaitafel en in m’n hoofd zitten nog veel meer ideetjes. Maar de wedstrijd, waarbij je zomaar eventjes een naaimachine kan winnen, gaf me toch net dat kleine schopje onder m’n kont om eraan te beginnen. Ikzelf ben content genoeg met mijn machientje, maar ik ken wel iemand die ik heel blij zou kunnen maken met een nieuwe machine, nietwaar mama? En ik ken ook twee meisjes die altijd blij zijn met wat hun mama maakt, gelukkig maar 😉

Ik had een schoon stofje dat ik zowel in het blauw als het groen had gekocht. Blauw is de lievelingskleur van Sia, dus dacht ik het groen voor Rosanne te nemen, maar ik had natuurlijk beter moeten weten, want kleine zus wilt hetzelfde als grote zus, d’oh!! Twee blauwe jurkjes werden dat dus 🙂 Maar de aandachtige lezer ziet dat het toch geen twee identieke jurkjes zijn geworden…

Bij het knippen ben ik namelijk in de mist gegaan, waardoor ik een voorpand, zonder er erg in te hebben, gespiegeld heb bij het jurkje van Sia. Nu moet je weten dat ik een van die mensen ben die een probleem heeft met links en rechts, dus tijdens het naaien van de jurk dacht ik de hele tijd dat het daaraan lag. Gelukkig wees het zichzelf uit eigenlijk, dus echt veel kon ik niet misdoen, maar het was wel duidelijk dat er iets mis was omdat het maar niet klopte met de uitleg, maar ook niet met het prentje op de voorkant, enz. Ik snapte er niks van! Pas toen ik aan het jurkje van Rosanne was begonnen, viel mijn frank. Zo komen we dus aan twee verschillende jurkjes, wat dan ook wel weer niet echt erg is 😉

Omdat de kids genoeg winterjurkjes hebben, naaide ik een mouwloze versie. Op basis van de maattabel voor Sia maat 5 jaar (met lengte 6 jaar) en voor Rosanne maat 4 jaar. Die zit wel nog ruim vind ik, maar dat lijkt me tegelijk niet slecht want zo zal hij in de zomer zeker nog passen. Ik voerde met een effen double gauze, wat me wel aangenaam leek voor de hete zomers hier.

Het naaien ging echt vlot, op de blinde rits na. Man, daar heb ik op gevloekt! Ik moet duidelijk terug wat oefenen want er waren tijden dat dat een héél pak vlotter ging! Maar met het resultaat ben ik echt heel tevreden, en de meisjes ook!

De fotoshoot vonden ze ook dolle pret, zeker met die waaiertjes. Mijn kitch-hartje deed eventjes een klein sprongetje met die lantaarn en die waaiertjes, en ik heb me moeten inhouden om niet een halve chinees nieuwjaar fotoboot te prepareren 🙂 En aangezien het hier een heerlijk weertje is de laatste dagen, wanen wij ons al volop in de lente en deerden de open mouwtjes zelfs geenszins! Sorry dus voor de foto-overload, ik vond het tè moeilijk om nog méér te selecteren 😉

Er werd trouwens nog 1 andere Laure genaaid, waar ik hopelijk vandaag de laatste hand aan ga kunnen leggen. Een beetje een hack, een bloesje met strikkraag en knoopjes op de rug. Binnenkort hier te zien, stay tuned 😉

It was really love at first sight with Laure, the latest pattern of Straightgrain, that’s for sure. It’s already in the name, since I have a dear friend called Laure in Belgium 🙂 I saw the pattern in a newsletter from an online fabric shop, and thought I had missed the pattern launch completely, something that is possible since I don’t have the time to read a lot of blogs the last few months. But when hopping over to the straightgrain blog, I saw it was only just being released! I immediately fell in love with the qipao collar and the pussy bow, both such an awesome features! A week later the paper pattern fell on my doorstep, speaking of service!

Most of the time I’m not the seamstress that immediately starts with a new pattern. Always so many ideas in my head, and short of time to make even a few of them for real. But An from straightgrain also launched a competition (luckily everyone has an equal chance!! also open for international seamstresses!!), which gave me the little extra motivation to start.

I had a gorgeous fabric that I had bought both in blue and green, and had planned to make both colors. But little sis wanted the same as big sis, of course, what was I thinking!!?? So 2 blue dresses. Although they are not identical, as one might see when looking closely. I made a mistake when cutting the fabric, and did not realize untill I was making the 2nd dress! I was struggling with the terms left and right in the tutorial and just couldn’t seem to get it right. But since I am one of those adults who still has to think really hard everytime about which side is left and which is right, I just thought it had something to do with that. Luckily you cannot really go very wrong with the construction itself, so no harm done 😉 And I actually think it’s funny they are a little different 😉

I sewed a sleeveless version since they both have more than enough winter items. Based on the measurements I took size 5 and 4, which is good, and gives them both (Rosanne maybe just a bit too much?) room to grow into them. The lining is solid double gauze, ideal for the hot summers here, as I figured. Sewing this dresses up went really smooth. Only the blind zipper was really a pain in the ***, and I mean REALLY! I think I have to practice some more again, since I remember times when I could do that just as smooth as hemming or whatever easy thing there is. But luckily both me and the girls LOVE this dress! We also had fun with the photoshoot. The nice spring-alike weather made sure we didn’t get cold, and the girls loved the fans a lot. Even my own kitch-loving heart skipped a beat by looking at the lantern and fans. I had to keep myself from buying whole loads of chinese newyear decoration stuff! I took a lot of pictures and found it hard to chose, so sorry for the picture overload!

I also made one other Laure, more a hack actually, with a pussy bow, without skirt, and with buttons on the back. Still to be finished, but almost there, so soon to be found here 😉 Stay tuned!
