Let’s Sti(c)k together – part 2, dit is Belgisch!

Hier zijn we met de tweede editie van Let’s Sti(c)k Together, een gezamenlijke naai-uitdaging waaraan een heleboel Belgische bloggers deelnemen. Marjolein van Flaflinko bedacht deze uitdaging, geïnspireerd door de sew challenge van Davina. Elke maand worden een heleboel criteria (of thema’s) voorgesteld, waaruit iedereen zijn favorieten kiest. Met de drie meest gekozen criteria gaat iedereen dan aan de slag. Hier kan je zien wat ik voor de eerste editie maakte, en vandaag toon ik jullie mijn resultaat van editie twee!

De criteria waren deze keer:

• dit is Belgisch
• werken met restjes/recyclage/…
• a touch of bling

Ik was vooral in de wolken over het criterium ‘Belgisch’, niet alleen omdat dit heel erg ruim is, maar ook omdat ik best trots ben op wat we in ons kleine landje allemaal aan creativiteit hebben op vlak van naaien. Geweldige patroonontwerpsters, supertoffe tijdschriften, prachtige stoffen van Belgische makelij, enz. Ik vond het dus vooral moeilijk om op dat vlak knopen door te hakken. Eens dat gebeurd was, moest ik maar gewoon door m’n restjes gaan en nadenken over hoe ik daar blingbling in kon verwerken.

Eigenlijk ging het kiezen al bij al nog best snel. Ik wilde ofwel een Tulip top of jurk maken, ofwel de Miss Madeline top, die ik vorig jaar had willen maken maar waar ik nooit toe gekomen was. Ik blijf een beetje verliefd op het Tulip patroon van Kaatjenaaisels & With Love By Eva, en ben zo blij dat m’n beide meisjes nog altijd in hun Tulipjes passen. Als ze dat aanhebben, krijg ik gegarandeerd complimentjes. De Miss Madeline top vind ik ook een supertof patroon, en leek me bovendien een relatief snel projectje. Uiteindelijk gaf dat de doorslag, want ik kwam in tijdgebrek en het moest dus relatief snel gaan. Die Tulip komt er hopelijk nog wel van 😉

Ik kan met trots zeggen dat letterlijk alles aan de top Belgisch is, zowel alle gebruikte stofjes als het patroon. De voorkant is een restje van de stof van Finch Fabrics die ik gebruikte voor deze Geneva Cardigan, de achterkant een restje effen witte tricot van Fragile, een Belgisch kledingmerk. Voor het gevlochten lint, gebruikte ik een stuk zilveren en glinsterende stof, ook van Fragile. Alle criteria kunnen dus afgevinkt worden met deze top! De top zat ook vlotjes in mekaar. Alleen denk ik dat het lint een beetje te dik gevlochten was, zodat het net iets te strak door het tunneltje van de voorkant gaat. Ach ja, als het dat maar is.

Het bleef echter niet bij een top alleen. Ik had niet zo gek veel van die blingbling stof, en heb een redelijk nieuw ‘probleempje’. Waar ik recent nog verkondigde dat Sia vooral shorten draagt en niet zo gek veel jurkjes en rokjes, wilt ze sinds kort ineens bijna alleen nog maar rokjes hebben! Van een ommekeer gesproken, en eentje waar ik niet helemaal op voorzien ben… Bovendien wilt ze dan wel rokjes, zwier, jurkjes, … aandoen, ze blijft tegelijk dol op klimmen, hangen, wild doen, … en in het best wel preutse Amerika zijn ze niet zo happig op zichtbare onderbroekjes en dergelijke. Dus ‘bedacht’ ik de ideale combinatie: een zwierrokje met een broekje erin verwerkt 🙂 En dat in een blingbling stofje, deze mama heeft gescoord!

Als patroontje nam ik de zwierrok die bij de Miss Madeline als gratis extraatje wordt aangeboden, tesamen met de Viola legging uit La Maison Victor, die ik uiteraard veeeeeel korter heb gemaakt. Die twee – Belgische, jawel – patroontjes pasten perfect op mekaar. Enige waar ik geen rekening mee had gehouden, was dat als ik er nog een rek in moest maken bovenaan, vooral het rokdeel nogal kort viel. Ik heb dat opgelost door er biaisgewijs een hele band aan te zetten met een rek erin. Een heupband dus eigenlijk. Het was wel wat gepruts om dat nog een beetje mooi gedaan te krijgen, maar ik ben een tevreden mens 🙂 Met een tevreden dochter!

Maxi zwiergehalte ook!

Last minute klaar zijn betekent ook niet veel tijd voor foto’s. Als je dan het enige zonnig momentje van de dag mist, en het voor de rest enkel maar regen is, waardoor onze andere plannen, met name een wandeling in een natuurgebied hier niet zo ver vandaan, in het water vallen, tja… Dan moet een mens al eens improviseren. Daardoor staat er in ons klein livingske nu een soort tipi met wat bamboestokken voor in de tuin, die we dan maar als foto-achtergrond probeerden te gebruiken, net als de play d’oh pony’s die als accessoire moesten dienen, en de papa die een beetje ongepland eigenlijk ook een soort fotoshoot accessoire werd… Zo hadden wij weliswaar een best gezellig dagje, maar mooie foto’s leverde het absoluut niet op helaas… 🙂

Enneh… Moest er interesse in zijn, wil ik dat rokje met broekje erin best nog eens opnieuw maken en er wat fotootjes van nemen voor een kleine tutorial. Geef maar een gil in de reacties dan 😉

So here we are with the 2nd edition of  Let’s Sti(c)k Together, a sewing challenge that I am joining together with a whole bunch of Belgian bloggers. Marjolein, the lady behind the blog Flaflinko invented this challenge, inspired by the sew challenge by Davina. Every month a lot of criteria are proposed, and everyone can choose favorites. The 3 most chosen criteria are the ones to be used by every participant that month. Here you can see what I made for the first edition, and today I’m showing you the result of the 2nd edition.

These were the criteria this time:

• this is belgian
• working with scraps or recycling fabric
• a touch of ‘bling’ (sparkle)

I especially liked the criterium ‘belgian’, not only because it is very broad, but also because I’m proud of the amount of (sewing) creativity we have to offer in our little country. We have great pattern designers, stylish and modern and inspiring sewing magazines, fabulous fabrics made and/or designed by Belgians, and so on. So the hardest part might have been to make choices out of that whole variety! Once that was done, I just had to go through my leftovers and think about a way to add some ‘blingbling’ to it.

To be honest, for once the choice was rather quickly made. I wanted to make either a Tulip top or dress, or the Miss Madeline top, that I had wanted to sew last year but never got to. I still am madly in love with the Tulip pattern by Kaatjenaaisels and With Love by Eva, and am so happy my girls still fit in their Tulip dresses. Whenever they wear it, I ALWAYS get compliments! I also really like the design of the Miss Madeline top/dress, and it seemed like a very quick project. That’s what made me decide to go for it, since I got in a bit of time pressure… Hopefully this Tulip will eventually be made as well 😉

I am proud to say that literally everything about this top is Belgian: all fabrics used, and the pattern. The front panel is a leftover of the fabric by Finch Fabrics that I used for this Geneva Cardigan, the back is a leftover piece of solid white jersey by Fragile, a Belgian clothing brand whose fabrics are sold by Belgian webshop Mondepot. For the braided necktie (is that a right translation? sorry I don’t know!) I used a piece of shiny silver fabric, also from Fragile. So I can check off all 3 criteria in this top, yay! The top came together fairly easy. I only think the braid is a bit too thick, I should have pulled a bit harder to make it more flat and the tunnel on the top of the front wouldn’t be so thick. But well, if that is all… 😉

I didn’t stop with the top alone. I did not have so many of this silver fabric, and am having a rather new little ‘problem’. While I recently wrote here that Sia mainly wore shorts and tops in summer, she recently, all of a sudden, made a 180 degree turn and now almost only wants to wear skirts, dresses, all with as much twirl factor as possible. But at the same time she still wants to climb trees, be wild, hang on branches, … Since I kind of have the impression that here in the USA people are a little more sensitive to anything a little too naked, these skirts do not always give the coverage we would like. So I thought I could try to make a built-in (short) legging in a twirly skirt. All that in a ‘blingbling’ fabric! Yep, this mommy scored big time 😉

I used the add-on twirly skirt option for the Miss Madeline pattern, together with a pattern for leggings out of a Belgian sewing magazine called La Maison Victor. I obviously shortened the leggings very much. Those 2 -Belgian- patterns were a perfect match to each other, I didn’t have to adjust the length of the waist at all. The only thing I forgot about, was that I had needed to add some length on the skirt because there was no extra fabric for inserting elastic. So I created a bias-like waistband, and added elastic in it, and stitched it on the skirt and leggings. It was a bit messy, but I still am happy with the result, and my daughter is even happier!

Last minute sewing also means not having much time to take pictures. If you then miss the only sunny moment of the whole day, and the rest of the day only gives you rain, making our plans for the day (a walk in a nearby nature parc) rather impossible, well… then you just have to improvise. That means we now have an improvised tipi tent in our small living room, play d’oh ponies are the photo props of the day, and even daddy kind of became a picture accessory… I can say we had a cosy day after all, but that doesn’t make these pictures any better unfortunately… So you’ll have to do with these rather ugly lighted and colored pictures… 😉

P.S. If anyone would be interested, I can always make this skirt with built-in leggings again and make some pictures of the making process as a sort of tutorial… Just give a shout in the comments then 😉
