Neon Nina – Nina Blouse Blogtour

Na een maandje of 4-5 stof ik deze blog eens eventjes af voor mijn eerste naaisel uit Trinidad! Sinds mijn Feliz jurk werd er zo goed als niks genaaid, op een kussenhoes en een mislukte matrasovertrek na. Zo een internationale verhuis, daar komt wat bij kijken, dat geef ik u op een blaadje. Het ontbrak me vooral aan tijd, maar ook wel een beetje aan zin om te naaien. En nog meer om te bloggen. We zien wel of daar verandering in komt de komende weken of maanden, of het er ooit van komt om de stapel ongeblogde naaisels hier te tonen, of om eindelijk mijn andere blog over ons familieleven eens up te daten.

Vandaag doe ik in elk geval met heel veel plezier mee aan de blogtour ter promotie van de Nina Blouse, het nieuwste patronenkindje van Olga, de getalenteerde dame achter Coffee & Thread. Claudia van de IG-account @frl.love stuurde me een aantal weken geleden een bericht met de vraag of ik mee wilde doen aan de blogtour, en ik kan niet ontkennen dat ik me ongelooflijk geflatteerd voelde daardoor. De omstandigheden en timing waren echter niet bepaald ideaal. We hadden immers nog geen idee wanneer onze container met spullen, waaronder dus ook naaimachine en stofjes, zou aankomen. Dat zou ten vroegste eind februari zijn, en dan moet je nog beginnen met uitpakken natuurlijk, terwijl het dagelijkse leven ook doorgaat. Maar kijk, de container kwam, van de ruim 330 dozen werd het merendeel intussen uitgepakt, en ondanks dat het huis nog steeds een complete chaos is (waar ik gek van word!) en ondanks dat er vanalles gebeurde dat voor extra vertraging zorgde, lukte het toch om een Nina blouse te fabriceren, die zowaar net op tijd klaar raakte! Yay!

Ik presenteer u dus mijn Neon Nina 😉

Ik had vanalle ideetjes in m’n hoofd, zoals een hack-mix van de Polina jurk en de Nina Blouse, of een kraagje met een ruffle eraan (zoals hier), of een kraagje met borduursel, wat het dus geworden is.

Aan stofjes om uit te kiezen geen gebrek hier. Uiteindelijk koos ik voor een van mijn laatste aankopen voor de verhuis, een geweldig schoon stofje uit de Neon Neppy collectie van Robert Kaufman. Ik kocht het in 2 kleuren en wil er zeker ook nog eens iets voor mezelf in maken. Ik hou namelijk wel van een beetje fluo, zoals je eerder al kon zien… De stof heeft allemaal fijne fluo er doorheen geweven, wat een heel leuk effect geeft, vind ik. Het stofje riep naar mij ‘nog fluo, meer fluo!’, en ik kon niet weerstaan aan die lokroep 😉 Toen ik de stof kocht, had ik al het idee om er met fluo draad op te borduren, en dus had ik al fluo borduurgaren gekocht. Maar goed, want zoiets is hier totaal onvindbaar in Trinidad (net als vanalles anders…). Ik voegde trouwens nog wat extra fluo toe, door de kapmouwtjes te voeren met een restje fluogele stof. Fluo all over 😉

Ik besloot deze keer voor Rosanne te naaien, want Sia draagt een schooluniform en heeft dus niet bepaald veel nood aan extra kledij. Ik koos maatje 5 jaar voor mijn nogal grote net-vierjarige, op basis van de maattabel, waar ze tussen maat 4 en 5 zat. Het zit redelijk ruim daardoor, maar het patroon is volgens mij ook zo bedoeld, en ik heb liever wat ruimer dan te klein.

Met het patroondeel van het kraagje erbij, tekende ik uit de losse pols een borduurpatroontje erop, met allemaal ietwat geometrische figuren, of hoe moet je dat noemen. En dan borduren maar 😉 Het was wel een beetje spannend, moet ik zeggen. Het is allemaal met de hand geborduurd, dus alles behalve perfect, en je borduurt ook op de bovenkant van de kraag zonder dat die er al aan genaaid is. Je ziet dus pas hoe het eruit ziet nadat je helemaal klaar bent en er geen weg terug is. En een plan B was er niet! Gelukkig had ik toch al bij al redelijk precies geknipt en is het relatief symmetrisch. Ik ben er tevreden mee 🙂 Het borduren deed ik trouwens tijdens ons kort tripje naar Tobago, en dat was best aangenaam. Op m’n IG-account kan je daar nog wat fotootjes van zien 😉

Het naaien ging verder vlot, ik was een beetje opgelucht dat ik het nog kon 😉 de handleiding is duidelijk, zoals we dat gewend zijn, en ik hou van de leuke details en de mooie afwerking. Rosanne is  ook blij met haar nieuwe blouse, en wilde ze niet meer uitdoen na het passen. Maar goed dat ik meteen thuis een reeks foto’s nam, want na 2 uur was er al chocolade op gesmost, oeps… Sia wilde ineens ook een precies dezelfde blouse, dus ik denk dat het wel snor zit met deze Nina 🙂 Sorry voor de foto-overload! After all these months it is time to dust off this little blog to present to you the first sewing project I made in Trinidad. After my Feliz dress I have hardly sewn anything anymore, except for a pillow cover and a failed mattress cover. Moving internationally, it takes quite some energy, I can tell you that. I mostly had a lack of time, but also a lack of drive to sew. And even more to blog. Time will tell if that will change over the next couple of weeks or months, and whether or not I will ever get to write about the whole pile of never blogged sewing projects, or get to finally update the blog I have about our family life while we are away from Belgium. 

But I’m here today, and happy to be here too, joining in the blogtour to promote the  Nina Blouse, the newest baby in the pattern family of  Olga, the talented lady behind Coffee & Thread. Claudia, the lady behind the IG-account @frl.love sent me a message a few weeks ago, asking me whether I wanted to join this tour. I can’t deny I felt extremely flattered and honored by that question. The circumstances were far from ideal however. We had no idea yet as to when our container with our belongings (including sewing machine, fabrics, …) would arrive. We only knew it would not be before the end of February. And then you still have to start unpacking too, obviously. But hey, the container arrived, we have unpacked the majority of the 330 boxes, and even though the house is still a complete chaos (which drives me crazy!!), even though a lot of things happened that caused some extra delay, I still managed to produce a Nina Blouse, just right on time! Yay! 

So I can present to you my Neon Nina 😉 

I had a lot of ideas in my head: some sort of hack/mix between the Nina blouse and the Polina dress, a collar with ruffles (just like the one you can see  here), or an embroidered collar. I have no shortage of fabrics to chose from, to say the least, although that actually doesn’t make chosing easier 😉 I picked a fabric that I ordered shortly before we moved, a fabric from the Neon Neppy collection of Robert Kaufman. I adore this collection so much that I bought 2 colors of it, oops. I just love a bit of neon now and then, as you might have seen before. The fabric has fine neon threads woven through, which really gives it that little extra, a funky touch. The fabric had called me even before I bought it: ‘add more neon, more more more neon!!’, so I couldn’t resist this calling and did as I was told: I ordered some neon embroidery floss too, to use on this fabric. Luckily I did that before we moved, as I can tell you such a thing is impossible to find here in Trinidad, as far as I know. Just like many other things too, by the way.

This time I decided to sew something for Rosanne. Sia has to wear a uniform to school, so she really doesn’t need much extra clothes. I cut size 5 for my rather tall just-4-year-old, based on the measurements, where she was in between size 4 and 5. I think it is a little on the wide side for her, but I also think that is how the pattern is meant to be, and I even prefer having some room left instead of having a too tight blouse. Especially since the heat here makes airy, breezy clothes just ideal. 

With the pattern piece of the collar, I drew an embroidery pattern, something I just made up while drawing it. Once I thought it was good enough, I started embroidering 😉 I was a bit exciting, I must say, as it was kind of guessing what the final result would look like. Would it be symmetrical enough? How would it look when the collar would be attached to the  blouse? etc. Once it is sewn on the blouse, there’s no way back! And I did not have a plan B 🙂 Luckily it was quite alright. Not perfect at all, but I’m happy with how it turned out. I did the embroidering while we were on a short trip to Tobago, which was quite a nice surrounding, as you can see on my IG-account 😉

The sewing process went quite smoothly.   I was happy I still knew how to sew 🙂 The tutorial is clear, as I am used to with the Coffee & Thread patterns. I love the details of the pattern and the clean finishes it provides. Rosanne also loves her new blouse and did not want to take it off after trying it on. Luckily I was smart enough to immediately take pictures at home, because a little later she spilled chocolate on it, so no more possibilities for a photo shoot there. Ooops… Sia also immediately asked for exactly the same blouse, so I guess I can call it a success 🙂
