Sew Challenge III – Vienna dress & e-reader sleeve

Vermoedelijk moet ik intussen de Sew Challenge, georganiseerd door Davina van de blog Woohoo, niet meer voorstellen. Ik deed al twee keer mee (hier en hier) en vond het telkens een erg leuke ervaring, al bracht het ook telkens de nodige stress met zich mee 🙂 Toen de derde editie werd aangekondigd, twijfelde ik dus niet lang en gaf ik me opnieuw op. Deze keer kreeg ik deze 3 criteria om mee aan de slag te gaan:

• gebruik het patroon de Vienna Dress van Kaatjenaaisels & Bel’Etoile (dat ik speciaal voor deze gelegenheid heb gekregen van deze gulle sponsors, waarvoor heeeeeeel veel dank!!!)
• combineer twee verschillende stoffen
• maak een bijpassend handtasje uit kurk met als voering dezelfde stof als de jurk

Mijn radartjes gingen meteen aan het werk. Ik wist ook meteen dat ik een print onderaan wilde, en een effen stuk bovenaan, en dat ik daar met wat borduurwerk wilde spelen. Er passeerden verschillende stofjes de revue, ik kocht er zelfs meerdere speciaal voor dit project, maar de uiteindelijke stofkeuze gebeurde eerder toevallig. Ik was ergens in juli in de Stitch Sew Shop om een stofje te zoeken dat ik nodig had, en zag daar de ultieme zomerstof liggen, een zachte en lichte viscose-rayon (ik ben niet helemaal zeker) met een tropische palmboomprint. Op een Estate Sale (een uitverkoop van de hele inboedel van een huis) had ik in april een heleboel schatten op de kop getikt, waaronder een prachtige chambray-achtige blauwe stof. Die twee waren de perfecte match met elkaar, met Sia, en met onze vakantiebestemming!

Het jurkje zat heel vlot in mekaar, de instructies zijn superduidelijk en vlot. Ik koos voor de rimpelrok en het V-rugpand, en het kapmouwtje. Ik nam maat 122 voor mijn 5,5-jarige die nogal aan de grote kant is. Haar borstomtrek zat tussen de twee maten in, dus koos ik zoals de instructies me vertelden, voor de grootste maat. En dat was perfect! Ik moet zeggen dat ik echt supertevreden was van het jurkje, zelfs nog voor het borduursel erbij kwam. Ik hou echt van de ronde vorm die zo een klein beetje opbolt, en die zo mooi meewappert met de wind. Speels en licht, het heeft iets onschuldigs en zoet, zoals de kleine wondertjes die deze jurkjes dragen…

Het borduursel heb ik er met de hand en met veel geduld op geborduurd tijdens ons verblijf op een klein en afgelegen eilandje in Belize, waar we werkelijk de tijd van ons leven hadden. Ik schreef er al eerder over, in mijn vorige twee blogberichten (hier en hier). Ik gebruikte geen patroon, maar keek naar de print van de stof en heb geprobeerd me daarop te baseren. Ik heb ook geen specifieke borduursteek gebruikt, gewoon eigenlijk ‘maar wat’ gedaan. De eerste palmboom duurde een eeuwigheid, en even twijfelde ik of ik er nog meer zou opzetten, maar dan bleef het voorpand zo leeg. Dus begon ik er toch aan, maar koos ik iets simpelere palmbomen, en ik ben er even tevreden van 🙂 Ik moet zeggen dat het borduurwerk me echt vervult van trots, en dat het ook erg leuk was om te doen. Natuurlijk is dat ook wel deels omdat ik altijd al zo zot was van borduursel, maar het had ook iets meditatiefs eigenlijk, Echt wel een aanrader wat mij betreft 🙂

En zeg nu zelf: onder deze omstandigheden wat borduren, daar kan een mens niet over klagen he 😉

Ik ben dus echt bijzonder tevreden met dit jurkje, en ik niet alleen, want Sia zelf is ook superblij ermee en draagt het heel graag! Sorry dus voor de overdaad aan foto’s!

Maar de opdracht was ook om een handtasje erbij te maken met kurkleer en eenzelfde stofje. Hier heb ik eigenlijk het langst over gedaan, want ik raakte er maar niet uit. Ik zocht patronen en doorzocht mijn pinterest bord. Keuze genoeg eigenlijk. Uiteindelijk heb ik me laten leiden door wat ik nodig had en werd het niet echt een handtasje, maar wel een ander soort ‘tas’, namelijk een hoes voor mijn e-reader, die ik graag en veel gebruikt heb op reis. Wat een heerlijke aankoop was dat! Ik zocht patroontjes, maar was nooit helemaal overtuigd, en uiteindelijk heb ik me gebaseerd op een patroontje uit het boek Zo Geknipt 2. Ik gaf er een beetje een eigen draai aan, en de sluiting heb ik gemaakt door de flap naar binnen dicht te naaien met een elastiek ertussen.

Om in thema te blijven, kon ook hier borduursel niet achterwege blijven, dus borduurde ik een klein palmboompje erop, en de woorden ‘breathe’ en ‘be’, als herinnering aan wat belangrijk is, aan de kalmte en rust en vrijheid die ik voelde daar op dat eilandje, een gevoel dat ik zo hard wil vasthouden, maar dat soms wel best ver weg lijkt. Maar alle beetjes helpen, dus misschien deze hoes ook wel 🙂

I guess I don’t need to introduce the Sew Challenge, organized by Davina van de blog Woohoo, anymore. I joined this challenge already 2 times (see here and here) and enjoyed participating both times very much, even though it was sometimes a bit stressful as well 😊 When this third edition was announced, I didn’t hesitate and signed up for it. This time I received these 3 criteria:

• Use the Vienna Dress pattern by Kaatjenaaisels & Bel’Etoile (I received this for free as sponsoring of the sew challenge, and want to shout out loud a BIG thank you for that kind gesture!!)
• Combine 2 different fabrics
• Make a purse/bag to go along in cork leather, with as lining one of the fabrics used for the dress

I immediately started thinking about how I would do it. I knew I wanted a print for the skirt, and a solid fabric for the bodice, and that I wanted to add some handembroidery too. More than one fabric came to my mind, and even to my fabric stash (oops), but the final choice was made just by coincidence. I was at the Stitch Sew Shop to find a fabric I had laid my eye on, when I saw the ultimate summer fabric, a soft and very light rayon with a tropical print. I just had to buy it, and knew exactly what fabric to combine it with: a blue chambray-alike fabric I had found at an estate sale in april, where I happened to find many treasures. Those 2 fabrics were just the perfect match with each other, with Sia, and with our holiday destination Belize!

 The instructions for the dress were very detailed and clear, so making it was not difficult at all. I chose the gathered skirt, the V-shaped back, and the cap sleeves. I took size 122 for my 5,5y old, who is on the tall side. Her chest circumference was between 116 and 122, and as the instruction mentioned, I then should take the biggest size. And the instructions were right, the fit is spot-on! I must say I am really very pleased with the dress, even before I added the embroidery. I really love the playful round design of the front, that flows with the wind, light, sweet and innocent like the little wonders wearing these dresses…

I embroidered the palm trees by hand on the dress with a lot of patience while we were staying at the fabulous little island on Glovers Atoll in Belize, where we had the time of our lives. I already wrote about that in my last 2 blogposts (here and here). I didn’t use an existing embroidery pattern, but looked at the print of the fabric and tried to go from there to make it look alike. I didn’t use a specific embroidery stitch, but just improvised. The first palm tree took me an eternity to embroider, which made me doubt if I would add some more. But then the bodice still looked so empty and not like what I had in mind, so I went for it. I just chose to embroider 2 slightly less complicated trees, and they were much faster ready, and I am equally satisfied 😊 I must say I feel so proud of the embroidery. Not only am I a huge lover of all things embroidery (as might be clear for people who would follow me already longer 😉), it was also so much fun to do, and even a little meditative! I can recommend it to everyone 😊 And obviously there are also worse circumstances and surroundings to work on a project like this 😉 

So I can only say I am extremely happy and satisfied with this dress. And I’m not the only one, as Sia herself is also very happy with it and wants to wear it a lot! So sorry-not-sorry for the overload of pictures!

But the challenge was also to make a purse/bag to go along. That part of the challenge took me still quite some time. I scrolled through pinterest, searched for patterns, and although there were plenty of choices, I just couldn’t decide. But eventually I let my ‘needs’ guide me to a choice. I didn’t really need a purse, but I did need a sleeve for my new e-reader, that I have used a lot since I bought it before our vacation. A very rewarding purchase that was! I found some tutorials online, but none of them really matched with how I wanted it to look, so I ended up with an idea based on the look of a laptop sleeve pattern in a dutch sewing book called ‘Zo Geknipt’. I improvised a little by turning the closure to the inside, inserting a wide elastic through it.

To stay in theme, I couldn’t resist adding a little embroidery here as well. So I embroidered a little palm tree and the words ‘breathe’ and ‘be’, to remind me of what is truly important, and of the calmness, peace and freedom I felt there on that little island where we were. A feeling that I want to hold on to, even though that seems so difficult sometimes. But all small things can help, so maybe so does this sleeve 😉
