my Kochi Kimono, 2 times Sakura

In juni kwam de nieuwe collectie van Papercut Patterns uit, genaamd Sakura. Ik leerde Papercut Patterns nog niet zo heel erg lang geleden kennen, en kocht toen meteen twee leuke patronen. De verpakking alleen al is zo schoon dat het moeilijk weerstaan is… In de nieuwe collectie zitten ook weer echte pareltjes, en ik was compleet verliefd op deze Kochi Kimono. Niet veel later zat dat patroontje in m’n brievenbus en rond dezelfde tijd zag ik bij Anthropologie een prachtige, maar prijzige kimono met borduursel. De trouwe lezers van deze blog weten dat ik compleet zot ben van alles wat met borduursels te maken heeft. Mijn pinterestbord ‘kledinginspiratie’ verraadt dat ook ‘een heel klein beetje’ – ahum… Alleen stak dat prijskaartje me toch wel duchtig tegen. Zelf maken dus! Heerlijk vind ik het dat ik dat begin te kunnen, al is het nadeel daarvan dat ik tegenwoordig veel te veel zelf wil doen, terwijl mijn dagen ook maar 24 uren tellen natuurlijk. Herkenbaar voor andere naaisters? Dat gedacht “nee, dat ga ik niet kopen want dat kan ik zelf maken”? – om er dan nooit toe te komen, of toch niet op tijd…

Begin juli stootte ik toevallig op de blog The Monthly Stitch, en daar is het nu volop Indie Pattern Month, waarbij het elke week een nieuwe wedstrijd is. Deze week, nog tot en met vrijdag 14 juli, is het wedstrijd-thema ‘new to me’. Vorige week was het thema ‘jurken’ en naaide ik een Nore dress, maar die was niet op tijd klaar helaas 🙂 Deze week ben ik gelukkig wel net op tijd klaar! Deze kimono past in het thema omdat ik nooit eerder iets van Papercut Patterns maakte, of zelfs maar probeerde. Hopelijk valt het in de smaak 🙂 Het is bovendien ook de eerste keer dat ik zo’n patch gebruik, dus ook dat is ‘new to me’. Helaas zag ik vandaag tijdens de fotoshoot dat er een heel klein stukje bovenaan los is gekomen. Waarschijnlijk niet goed gestreken, maar dat is zo verholpen. Ik denk ook dat ik misschien hier en daar een klein naaisteekje erin ga zetten met de hand, om zeker te zijn dat de patch blijft zitten.

Omdat ik dringend werk moet maken van die mega-stoffenvoorraad, kocht ik geen nieuwe stof, maar gebruikte ik wat ik had liggen: twee soorten crêpe-stof, de donkerblauwe heeft een heel subtiele gouden glans, die je echter niet ziet op de foto’s. Het is een stof waarvan ik in totaal ongeveer 4 meter kocht uit de koopjeshoek bij G Street Fabrics. Aan 3 dollar per meter kan een mens niet sukkelen voor zo’n stof, dacht ik zo. Ik had een hemd voor Lode in gedachten om mee te beginnen, maar mezelf kennende wordt dat weer een project voor zijn volgende verjaardag, in februari. Af en toe ben ik een beetje egoïstisch 🙂  Ik wilde de randen in een andere kleur doen, naar het voorbeeld van die kimono van Anthropologie, en verder wilde ik de stof sober houden, zodat een geborduurde bloemenpatch helemaal tot zijn recht zou komen. Die patch had ik al meer dan een maand geleden gekocht bij Shine Trim, samen met nog een reeks andere bloemenpatches. Ik kon namelijk niet zo goed kiezen 🙂  Maar don’t worry, ik ga die anderen ook zeker nog gebruiken gezien mijn borduursel-liefde! Wat ben ik een gelukvogel dat dat ineens helemaal ‘in’ is, en ik zo mijn hartje kan ophalen aan al die borduurpracht!

Ik koos trouwens specifiek voor deze lichte stoffen, omdat ik iets wilde om in de zomer of op vakantie ’s avonds makkelijk overaan te kunnen doen. En ik denk dat het ook in het tussenseizoen nog goed van pas zou kunnen komen. De kleur van de stoffen gaat ook best bij veel, durf ik te denken. Dus ik hoop dat het veel gedragen zal kunnen worden 🙂 En ik koos uit mijn recent aangelegd mini-voorraadje specifiek voor deze patch, nadat ik op de blog van The Monthly Stitch, waarvoor Papercut Patterns ook een sponsor is, deze blogpost las, met deze woorden:

Ik twijfelde wel erg over de maat. Aangezien ik nogal tenger gebouwd ben aan de schouders, armen en bovenlichaam, maar -euh – wat minder ‘tenger’ aan alles daaronder (ok, behalve mijn voeten dan, die zijn ook mini), heb ik altijd een maat of 2 verschil tussen borstomtrek en heupomtrek. Bovenaan had ik een XS nodig (ja dames, dit is effectief een matentabel waar je blij van wordt!) en onderaan (slechts! jeuj!) een medium. Nu weet ik wel dat het een los model is, maar ik had geen zin in compleet oversized aan de schouders, oftewel de buik-heup-regio die ik niet toe zou krijgen met die lintjes. Ik durfde niet goed aanpassingen maken omdat ik niet echt zag hoe ik dat best zou aanpakken. Tijd voor een testversie was er naar goede gewoonte niet. Uiteindelijk koos ik voor XS, en eigenlijk ben ik daar wel best tevreden over. De splitjes aan de onderkant van de kimono zorgen ervoor dat er extra ruimte is, wat wel nodig was denk ik, maar wat (mij) niet stoort als de kimono dicht is.

Het naaien zelf ging vlot, ik deed waarschijnlijk ongeveer het langste over die vreselijke lintjes. Niet het keren ervan, maar de uiteinden dichtnaaien, grrr… Volgende keer naai ik een einde toe en het andere zit, behalve bij de lange linten, toch in de naad, dus zie je niet. Als je het patroon zelf wilt maken, is dat misschien iets om aan te denken 🙂 Ik liet daarnaast ook 1 van de dubbele lintjes weg in de zijkant. Gezien de patch aan de ene kant, zou ik de kimono toch niet andersom sluiten, en ik wilde geen opzichtig loshangend lintje hebben als de kimono dicht is. Er zit dus enkel 1 kort lint aan de binnenzijde. Ik liet ook de zak weg, omdat ik de aandacht naar de bloemenpatch wilde hebben, en een zak me niet nodig leek.

Verder kan ik niks aanmerken op het patroon en de handleiding. Het is echt niet moeilijk, ik denk dat het ook beginnersvriendelijk is. Ik ben zelf echt heel erg tevreden met het resultaat. Toen ik vorige nacht klaar was, heb ik m’n kimono opgehangen aan het raam en er nog even naar zitten kijken. Ik ben echt trots en blij gaan slapen! ’t Is helemaal iets voor mij! Over de foto’s ben ik ook blij, al hoorde ik vandaag helaas dat deze muurschilderingen binnenkort zullen verdwijnen. Zo jammer… Hopelijk wordt de boodschap erop, ook hier in Amerika en in deze tijden, toch niet helemaal vergeten…

Last June Papercut Patterns launched a whole new collection, named Sakura. I don’t know this pattern designer so long, as I only recently discovered them in the Stitch Sew Shop not so far from here. I immediately bought 2 patterns, as I find even the package hard to resist! The new collection also had some real beauties in it. I immediately fell in love with this Kochi Kimono! Not much later the pattern arrived in my mail box, and around the same time I had let my eye fall onto a gorgeous, embroidered, but very pricy kimono at Anthropologie. Anyone who follows my blog already a bit longer, knows how I adore everything embroidery. My pinterestboard ‘kledinginspiratie’ (which means ‘clothing inspiration’) gives that also ‘just a little bit’ away 😉 The price tag of this kimono was really too much, so I thought by myself: why not make one myself? I like the fact that I am capable of doing that more and more often, as my skills are slowly but surely improving, although there is a disadvantage to that as well. So often I need things, like tops or swimwear or whatever, find myself thinking I can and want to do it myself, but end up not having enough time and not having what I need 🙂 Anyone recognize that? 😉 

Early July I discovered the blog  The Monthly Stitch, where Indie Pattern Month is happening this month. Every week there is a new contest, and this week, until tomorrow/today (Friday July 14th) the theme is ‘new to me’. Last week was about dresses, and I made a Nore dress (by Compagnie M) but was too late to enter it. This week I’m happy I’m just on time 🙂 The kimono fits right into the theme, as I have never sewn or even tried a pattern of Papercut Patterns before (just buying doesn’t count ;-)). And it is also the first time I’m using an embroidered patch. Unfortunately I saw after the photoshoot that a tiny piece of it, the top of the patch, has come loose. I assume I didn’t iron that good enough. There was really no time for a second photoshoot, but with a little extra ironing this little problem will surely be solved. I am considering handstitching just a little bit too, to make sure it can’t get loose. 

Because I really need to lessen my big fabric stash, I didn’t buy new fabric, but used 2 crêpe fabrics I already had. The dark blue one has a very subtle golden shine in it, which isn’t visible on the pictures unfortunately. I bought about 4 meters of it in the sales corner of  G Street Fabrics. For 3 dollars a yard you can’t really leave that there. I had a shirt for Lode in mind when I bought it, but knowing myself that will probably become a project for his next birthday in February. Sometimes I am a little selfish 😉 I wanted to do the bands in another color, just like the Anthropologie kimono, and the rest of the fabric had to be sober, in order to have the patch really stand out. I purchased that patch more than a month ago at Shine Trim, together with some other flower embroidered patches. I had a hard time making choices 😉 But don’t worry, I will surely use the other patches as well, given my big embroidery-love! I feel so lucky that suddenly embroidery is all in fashion (again), so I can find the treasures so easily!

I specifically chose these light fabrics because I wanted something easy to wear on summer evenings. I think it will also be good in fall or spring as well. The color will go with many things too, that’s always a win. I specifically chose this patch out of my new mini-stash of patches, after reading this blogpost on the blog The Monthly Stitch itself, with an interview with Papercut Patterns, a sponsor for Indie Pattern Month. This patch, a cherry blossoms patch, suddenly seemed like the only right choice!

I was very much in doubt about what size to chose. I am rather slender on the shoulders, arms, and chest, but -ahum – ‘a little less ‘slender”, down that region (unless you count my feet, those are tiny as well ;-)). I always need about 2 sizes up at the hips than I do at the chest. Here I needed an XS on the chest, but a M on the waist and hips (oh yes ladies, the sizing chart makes you happy!!). I obviously see it’s a loose, slightly oversized model, but I was worried I would end up with way too oversized on the shoulders, or too tight to get the kimono closed with the ties. I didn’t feel confident enough to make adaptations given the straight lines of the pattern pieces, and as usual I also didn’t have time for a muslin. I ended up, based on the measurements of the finished garment, to go for XS and I am happy with it. The slits in the side seams make for some extra room, which I think I did need, but I don’t think it’s bothersome when looking at it, at least not to me. 

The sewing went very easy. I think the ties were the step that took me the most time of the whole process. Not the turning, but the closing of the ends. Grrr!! Next time I will close one side already and turn it then (with some little tricks that’s not hard at all). The other end can be inside the kimono neck band seams, or inside the kimono, and that makes only maybe 2 or 3 ends to close. Maybe you’re not really following this right now, but it’s something to think of when you would want to make it in the future 😉 I also left out one half of a long tie, as I didn’t want a visible tie on the side of the flower patch. I will always close the kimono with the flower on the front, so I don’t need a tie on that side. So there is only a tie inside, on that side. (wow, sometimes I think I am writing complicated things… sorry! If you make it, this will make sense!). One last thing I ‘changed’ is not using pockets. I didn’t want a pocket taking away the attention of the flower patch, and it didn’t seem necessary either. 

Other than that I can’t make any remarks on the pattern or its instructions. It’s not difficult, I even think it’s beginner friendly. I myself am very happy with the result. When I had it finished last night, I hung it on a hanger on the window and looked at it for a few moments. I felt proud and happy when I went to bed! It’s so much my style! I’m also happy about the pictures, although I also heard these wall paintings are about to disappear very soon… Such a pity! Hopefully the message on them, will not be forgotten…
